The Institute’s remit includes academic research, organising intercultural and academic events, and managing a specialist library. Interns gain an insight into various aspects of the Institute’s work, such as thematic research, handling estates and donations, library cataloguing, and similar tasks. Academic tasks include, for example, compiling bibliographies, conducting internet research, proofreading and translating academic texts, making copies and scans, and working on the microfilm reader. In addition, interns are given an insight into other areas of the Institute’s work (library, administration, secretariat, reception, events) and are offered the opportunity to devote part of their internship to their own professional development or to work on a personal research topic as part of a seminar paper, Bachelor’s or Master’s thesis.
Our programme is aimed at students from the second semester onwards who are majoring or minoring in History or are enrolled in thematically similar, interdisciplinary degree programmes (such as Art and Cultural History and Interdisciplinary European Studies in Augsburg) and who have an interest in South-Eastern and Eastern Europe. No specific knowledge of South-Eastern or Eastern European languages is required of interns, although such knowledge is very welcome. The Institute assumes that interns have adequate health insurance. The internship does not give rise to any obligation on the part of the Institute to provide insurance. The internship is remunerated.
Funding opportunities are available for international students through the BAYHOST programme.
Highly motivated and interested students may apply for the interdisciplinary Master’s programme in ‘Interdisciplinary European Studies’ and combine their studies with an internship. Funding opportunities include the following:
The duration of the internship can be determined on an individual basis and, where appropriate, may be undertaken during the semester. However, the internship should be equivalent to at least four weeks; for legal reasons, the maximum duration is three months. Time limits must be strictly observed, particularly if the internship is to count towards a compulsory internship. In all cases, please contact the relevant contact person for compulsory internships within your degree programme in advance.
At the end of the internship, interns will be issued with a certificate and, upon request, a report. Interns are required to produce a brief final report.
