This specialist library developed from the private collection of the renowned bibliographer Erich Beck, which was acquired by the District of Swabia in 1989. This collection is regarded as the largest on Bukovina in Western Europe and is a distinctive feature of the Institute. Over the years, generous donations have been made by well-known scholars, such as the private library of the late President of the Romanian Academic Society, Dr Constantin Sporea, and his wife Adele. In 1996, the Bukowina-Institut took over the library of the Federal Archives of the Association of Buchenland Germans, and in early 2000, the Norbert Gaschler Collection. In 2004–2005, the collection was expanded by approximately 2,500 volumes on Romanian, Russian and Ukrainian linguistics and literary studies, as well as fiction in the original languages, through permanent loans from the University Library of Augsburg.
The library is funded by the Bukowina-Institut in Augsburg, on whose premises it is also located. There is a cooperation agreement between the Institute – which is an affiliated institute of the University – and the University Library of Augsburg; on the basis of this agreement, the Institute’s holdings have been listed in the catalogue of the Bavarian Library Network since 2003. These titles can be searched via the OPAC (Online Public Access Catalogue) of the University Library of Augsburg.
You can narrow your search to the Institute’s collection by going to Limit search ➤ Only from ➤ Bukowina Institute.
The library’s holdings prior to 2003, which have so far only been listed in the Institute Library’s card catalogue, are gradually being added to the union catalogue. Those wishing to use the library may do so during opening hours; however, advance booking is requested for time-consuming research. Several workstations and facilities (photocopiers and a microfilm reader) are available within the library itself. Books may be borrowed, with the exception of old and rare items. The Bukowina-Institut Library is integrated into the University Library’s electronic lending system. Users therefore require a University Library card to borrow items. As with items from the University Library, these may generally be borrowed for four weeks and renewed twice, each time for a further four weeks. The Institute’s library participates in the German interlibrary loan scheme via the interlibrary loan service of Augsburg University Library.
