Buko…? – what was that again? You’ve never heard of Bukovina? Don’t worry, because our permanent exhibition in the Bukovina Institute’s premises at the university will open your eyes to a diverse yet little-known region.

Discover the history of this historic region, from the days of the Habsburgs through the difficult times marked by flight and expulsion during the two world wars, right up to the present day.

Let yourself be transported to another era and set off on a journey of discovery through the region’s religious, linguistic and ethnic diversity. From historical maps and old photographs to everyday objects and the life stories behind them, there is something for everyone.

An exhibition you can experience with all your senses – listen to the stories of eyewitnesses at our audio stations, admire the diverse exhibits, or take a stroll through Habsburg-era Czernowitz (Ukrainian: Černivci) by following the streets on our walkable city map.

So come on – why wander far afield when ‘Europe in miniature’ is so close by!

Focusing on the history of Bukovina, the exhibition explores the themes of migration and coexistence in a diverse society, as well as uprooting and the loss of one’s homeland – and thus has the potential to resonate with many experiences in our society today.

The exhibition can be visited during our regular opening hours (except on public holidays).
