Göbelshöhe

With its restaurant, pavilion and terraces, Göbelshöhe was a popular destination. It was open mainly in the summer months and was the venue for concerts, theatre and events organised by clubs and often Jewish organisations. It was located in the middle of a grove of trees, not far from the main railway station, which was built later.

Its origins date back to the 1860s. The owner, Josef Göbel, who also owned the Göbel's brewery in the immediate vicinity, offered his beer for sale here from this time onwards. Josef Göbel also owned several houses (e.g. Hotel Russie) and shops in the town. In 1892, however, Göbel was forced to declare bankruptcy. The Göbelshöhe continued under this name with changing tenants and owners.

The contemporary press described the place in 1891 as follows: “The Göbelshöhe is undoubtedly the most popular and also the most beautiful resort that Chernivtsi has. The masses of visitors it enjoyed last summer only proved that our public has a lively sense of natural beauty [...]. To create more space [...] the restaurant on the Göbel Heights has been considerably extended. The owner, Mr Göbel, built a pavilion on the large upper terrace, set up many tables, provided communication and good lighting - in short, everything was done to meet all the requirements of a restaurant park. From this large terrace you can enjoy a wonderful view over the Pruth valley [...]. Our military music will be performed on this terrace twice a week [...]” (Bukowinaer Rundschau, 16 April 1891, p. 4).
