Café Habsburg

Café Habsburg was opened on 2 December 1898 and was considered one of the most exclusive establishments in the city, not least because of its location (Herrengasse 1). It attracted a wealthy clientele with a variety of newspapers and magazines, a billiard room, a winter bowling alley, concerts, readings, a ladies' salon and a telegraph service that provided visitors with the latest news in the afternoons.

Its owner, Josef Landau, was also a partner in the Bellevue Hotel and Restaurant opposite. His suicide in January 1908 in Chernivtsi was attributed by the local press to financial difficulties. The Café de l'Europe was also located in Herrengasse, opposite the side street next to the Café Habsburg.
