Hotel Bristol

The Hotel Bristol was built between 1905 and 1907 on what was then Rudolfsplatz, opposite the Musikverein (musical association). Architecturally, the building was in the Viennese Art Nouveau style. The hotel had a basement, four floors and a lift, which was unusual in the city at the time. There was a restaurant on the ground floor.

The hotel with 65 (later 75) rooms was opened on 24 November 1907 by Josef Landau, who was also the owner of the Café Habsburg. Writers Schalom Asch and Hirsch David Nomberg stayed at the Hotel Bristol during the Yiddish language conference in Chernivtsi in late August/early September 1908. The writer Karl Kraus also stayed at the Hotel Bristol during his reading tour of the region (29-30 November 1912). At the time, the hotel was managed by Philipp Rosenzweig. From 1944 the building belonged to the Medical University and served as a student residence.
