Hotel Moldavie

Hotel Moldavie was the first hotel in Chernivtsi and was built in the 1840s. In 1864 the hotel was modernised, “completely new and elegantly furnished, with all possible comfort for the passengers”. It had heating in all rooms and cheap fodder was available for travellers' horses (Bukowina, 9 December 1864, p. 4).

Before the construction of the City Theatre (1905) and the Philharmonic Hall (1877) in Chernivtsi, the hotel also served as a theatre and concert hall. The performances of Franz Liszt during his concert tour in 1847 are legendary. There had been a winter theatre here since 1863 (Bukovina, 4 November 1863, p. 4), and in 1865 the dance hall of the Moldavie Hotel was converted into a theatre, where performances took place all year round. This stage served as the town's theatre until 1877 (Czernowitzer Allgemeine Zeitung, 4 October 1905, p. 2ff.), when a separate theatre building was erected. The hotel existed until 1896, when it was converted into an apartment house (a block of flats rented out on a long-term basis). New shops and offices were also established here, such as the E. Engler manufacturing company and various solicitors' offices.
